Descripción

Este estudio cuasi experimental, de 5 años de duración, pretende evaluar la efectividad de un programa de prevención de VIH/SIDA para hombres en desventaja social.
Los objetivos específicos del proyecto son:

1.-	Identificar factores de riesgos para VIH/SIDA asociados a la conducta sexual y al uso de drogas de hombres adultos que viven en comunas con desventajas socioeconómicas en Chile
2.-	Identificar el nivel de interés de estos hombres por la prevención de VIH/SIDA y cómo lograr que un programa de entrenamiento en este tema resulte accequible
3.-	Adaptar y pilotear el programa Mano a Mano para hombres de acuerdo a las necesidades identificadas en ellos.
4.-	Evaluar la efectividad de la intervención realizada relacionada con conocimientos, actitudes, conductas de prevención de VIH/SIDA y participación comunitaria en la prevención de VIH/SIDA.

El proyecto se desarrollará considerando el trabajo previo realizado por el equipo de investigación Mano a Mano, mediante la integración de la experiencia internacional de entrenamiento en prevención de VIH/SIDA y la experiencia nacional con mujeres y trabajadores de la salud.

Abstract

Despite statistical trends, no HIV/AIDS prevention programs tailored to the needs of Chilean men are available in Chile. Prior work by the investigative team has shown that Chilean men recognize their lack of information and support and identify their need for effective HIV prevention programs. Same studies show that community leaders, HIV activists, women and health workers recognize that men need to be part of Chile's national HIV prevention strategy. Community based programs are needed that are both culturally appropriate and accessible for Chilean men. This study is designed to develop and test the effectiveness of Mano a Mano para hombres, an HIV prevention program for adult males living in a socio-economically disadvantaged environment in Chile. The specific aims are to: (1) Identify the unique HIV risks related to sexuality and substance use of adult males living in a socio-economically disadvantaged environment in Chile; (2).Identify these men's level of interest in HIV prevention and how to make the program accessible; (3) Adapt and pilot the Mano a Mano para Hombres program tailored to the needs of these young men.

PHASE; and (4) Evaluate the effectiveness of the tailored intervention in changing knowledge, attitudes, HIV prevention behaviors, and participation in community HIV prevention. Integrated trhough all pahses of this study are the secondary aims: strengthen the skills of the PI as an independent researcher and enhance interdisciplinary health research capacities of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC). Mano a Mano, an HIV intervention tailored for Chilean men will be developed by integrating the insights of Chilean men, women and health care workers with the investigative team's previous experience and international experience with existing HIV prevention interventions.

The effectiveness of the intervention will be assessed using a quasi-experimental design. The intervention group and a comparable control group will be assessed at baseline and three month post intervention. A sample of 600 men (300 intervention and 300 control group) will provide adequate power to test the research hypotheses. Currently, the investigative team is developing Mano a Mano: HIV prevention program for low-income Chilean women and health care workers. If the intervention is effective, it can be disseminated for men throughout Chile, since it is low-cost and uses existing infraestructure.
